Formal Landscaping
In one of our previous articles we talked about natural landscaping, so it's only fair that we discuss formal landscaping as well. There are varying degrees of "formal" within landscape design just as is in "natural" landscaping. Most times the formality will depend on the architecture of the home, interior design and homeowners' tastes. Colonial and contemporary architecture are examples of styles that support a formal landscape design.
When people think of "formal" landscaping the first thing that usually comes to mind is an English garden. The phrase "formal landscape" can be interpreted differently to different people and there are varying degrees of a formal design. Pine to Prairie's design team will discuss what works best for your home and personal style.
The basis for a formal landscape starts with; symmetry, geometric shapes, structure, balance, order and clean, crisp lines. Trimmed hedges are a staple in formal landscapes. They also take a lot of work to maintain. Good maintenance practices are a key element to traditional formal gardening. Clients wishing to implement this style of landscape need to take that into consideration.
The organized nature and discipline of a formal landscape is meant to evoke calm and peace. Some say it is a human's way to exert control over nature and create our ideal version of it.
Hardscape elements such as a patio or paths within a formal landscape are generally straight lined and geometric in shape. The preferred material choice is usually brick or stone. Grass space is typically used as an ornamental piece and can be bordered by paths or plant beds. Sculptures, fountains, pools, and specimen plants are used as focal points. Knot gardens are also commonly used in formal landscapes and make a great spot for kitchen and herb gardens.
