Pergolas
Pergola Structures are becoming more prevalent in the landscape because they create a transition from indoors to outdoors. Incorporating a pergola into a landscape design adds a place of refuge yet keeps you connected to nature through its open form. Contacting a designer prior to installing a pergola is crucial in making sure spatial composition is appropriate in relationship to all existing elements.
Pergolas add a true sense of structure to a landscape and can create a unity between other existing structures on a property. They can either be attached to a house or free standing. When attaching directly to the house you’re creating an immediate transition from indoors to outdoors. With a pergola positioned away from the house there is still a strong connection between the two.
We are able to add a dimension of detail to a pergola by embellishing the posts with stucco wraps, stone bases, and wood detailing. This is great way to further make a connection to the home and existing landscape by repeating material used on the façade of your house or repeating the same type of stone on the column base as is found in the landscape. Your designer will also be aware of codes and permits needed for the project
Pergola structures create a sense of shelter/refuge in that they have implied ceiling and walls. The overhead portion of a pergola can be created with varying degrees of openness. To determine what works for you, first identify how it will be used. If you’re using it to provide protection from the sun you should space the joists roughly 9-12 inches on center and make sure your running the rafters in the appropriate direction in relation to the angle of the sun.
If your primary use is for looks and sense of shelter, you can create many different designs for your ceiling. The overhead structure also creates wonderful shadows throughout the day that will add an element of interest to the landscape. Pergolas serve a function but can also act as a focal point or possibly frame a spectacular view. Pergolas also create a great spot for vines and hanging gardens. In addition, outdoor lighting can be added to the feature, which creates a romantic ambience for evening entertaining.
Dimensions of a structure can vary greatly depending upon its intended use and its scale in relationship to the house and property. You can create a cozy garden den with an 8’x10’ structure or an outdoor dinning room with at 14’x16’ structure. The head room should generally be somewhere between 7’-8 ½’. If it gets too tall you will lose the sense of enclosure. It’s also important to be aware of window and door heights on the house if you pergola will be located near it as to not obstruct any views.
