Elegant Outdoor Room with Formal Garden

For this project, the clients wanted a "formal meets natural" feel to their new landscape. The existing landscape included large limestone outcroppings and a very casual, eclectic planting plan. The home itself was built entirely of brick with one Chilton accent wall leading down to a pool.

An outdoor room was decided on to provide both additional recreation space and a structural point to help tie the new landscape with the existing house features. In order to achieve continuity, the same brick and stucco combination that was on the existing home, was used for the new outdoor room's exterior. Loaded with custom features such as a Chilton fireplace, vaulted ceiling, large window views of the property, and a twelve-foot bi-folding glass door, the outdoor room became an outdoor living area for any season.

With various grade changes happening throughout the property, a series of ashlar pattern Chilton walls were built using right angles to reinforce formality with such a natural stone. To facilitate an easy flow throughout, extra wide Chilton steps were built.

To balance the outdoor room and patio area, a formal garden complete with a pergola sitting space was designed for the back of the property. Framed with three different types of hedges, including arborvitae, holly, and boxwood the inside of the garden has a grass walking path, various flowering perennials and two teak benches underneath the pergola to relax and take it all in.
