What makes the Southtown office project stand out was our clients’ desire to treat a commercial project a little different. Rather than providing a typical commercial look with the landscape, it was decided upon to soften the exterior, and provide a more relaxed and inviting look.
Some of the constraints that come along with a commercial project, such as sun baked parking areas, heavily salted entrances and snow removal routes were solved with careful attention to plant selections, the combination of wood and rock mulches, and strategic design.
To achieve the inviting look the client was looking for, an updated residential style design was used in a commercial setting. Colorful perennials were employed in mass to provide splashes of maintenance free color throughout the season, ornamental grasses lend structure and grace to the buildings architecture, while shrubs and small ornamental trees offer different foliage color and textures.
A central garden was created with the use of a natural stone wall, a grouping of basalt columns and mixed plant materials to both frame the building and bring the inviting appeal we were looking for. A large paver patio was constructed for building residents using oversized, tumbled and textured pavers, typically found in a quiet backyard landscape.
Overall, the use of unique elements combines with design and scale to update this commercial site with the inviting and appealing look our client was asking for.
