The clients on this project wanted to turn their small backyard into an intimate outdoor patio, which they could enjoy together or use to entertain friends and family. The original site had water problems due to poor drainage, an old fence that didn't provide privacy, and pedestrian movement throughout was not functional.

Solving the problem of poor drainage was hugely impacted by the backyard patio design's positioning and shape. Not only did we have to meet existing driveway and door heights, but we also had to deal with two large shade trees with their roots close to the surface.

Since the amount of slope we could put on the backyard landscaping was limited, the placement of planting beds to catch excess water became important. When all was said and done, we had created a paver patio that was extremely functional and met the client's aesthetic expectations.

A new fence was created to give the homeowners privacy. Stepping stones embedded into the turf directed the traffic off the backyard patio to the client's new entrance out of the garage. An assortment of shade-tolerant plants was added to brighten the patio garden design.
